Three Busters

Out now, three brand new Prince Buster 7″ reissues from Rock A Shacka in Japan. Rock A Shacka have put out some superb Prince Buster 7″ reissues in the past but these are the first for a while.

All singles come on top quality reproductions of Buster’s original labels, plenty of reissue labels do this these days but Rocka A Shacka always do the very the best. The singles are apparently dubbed from … continue reading…

Unreleased Duke Reid on Trojan

A double helping of Duke Reid productions from Trojan this month with a 10″ and a 7″. A total of six tunes all apparently previously unreleased.

Tommy McCook & The Supersonics – Michelle/The Teacher Man – The Lesson (Trojan 7″)

Tommy McCook blows the melody of Michelle by The Beatles over a late rocksteady rhythm. On the other side an interesting talking style deejay cut by someone only identified as the Teacher, the harmonies … continue reading…

Caltone Pressure

Few would argue that there are many better re-issue companies than Pressure Sounds these days. For vinyl only you can talk about Deeper Knowledge/Digikiller and Dubstore, for CD and vinyl Universal/Trojan maybe run them close but Pressure Sounds continue to lead the way with quality CD’s/LP’s alongside vinyl singles all put together with a style and attention to detail that makes them hard to resist.

The latest addition to their catalogue is a collection of … continue reading…

Rocksteady Pressure

Four quality rocksteady 7″ reissues are available from Pressure Sounds right now. These releases of Phil Pratt produced sides on repro Caltone labels were announced several months ago but were hit by production problems and have only just become available. It was well worth the wait though, the music is superb, the presentation excellent and at only £4 to £5 a pop are bit of a bargain in this day and age.

What is Mod Reggae?

Trojan records have announced that four double CD compilations will be released at the end of the month. These appear to be a bit of a departure from other recent releases as they seem to cater to some extent to the collectors market with a higher proportion of obscure tunes. The four releases are Dub, Ska, Mod Reggae and a hits/rareities package called Heavy Heavy Monster Sound: The Story Of Trojan Records.

A rocksteady style: Jump And Shout

So here is another old mix from my old podomatic site. This is called Jump And Shout. As I said in Feb 2007 when this first appeared: A Rocksteady mix focussing mainly on the later period circa 1968 just as the music was turning into Reggae.

Pressure/Treasure…Pleasure Dub

Next up from Pressure Sounds is a re-issue of the classic dub set Pleasure Dub. This was the third in the trilogy of Dub LP’s of Treasure Isle Rocksteady classics originally recorded by Tommy McCook and the Supersonics and then mixed/dubbed by Errol Brown. Unlike the other two LP’s Treasure Dub Vol 1 and 2 Pleasure Dub has not been re-issued since the first release. The image on the right is of the original sleeve … continue reading…
