Trojan. Part 12 - Q, Randy's, Smash, Summit.

Please Don't Go - Count Suckle I'm The One, You're The One - Randy's All Stars
The Wizzard - The Aggrovators Froggie - U Roy Junior Monkey Girl - The Maytals

Q

Perhaps the hardest to find of all Trojan subsidiary labels and another that probably only managed a couple of issues. The label was named after the Q club a Soul/Reggae club in Paddington, W.London that opened in 1963. The club was run by former sound man Count Suckle (Wilbert Campbell) who takes production and artist credits on this record along with Freddie Notes and The Rudies. Titles are Please Don't Go/Bread On The Table.

Randys

Initially formed to issue the early Reggae productions of Vincent Chin, the Randys label managed around 35 issues between 1970 and 1973. The Chin family found further musical success with the productions of Vincent's son Clive before relocating to New York in the late 70's where they now run VP Records.

The first issue was I'm The One, You're The One credited to the Randy's All Stars an organ instrumental with a vocal intro. The flip side; End Us is the same tune without the intro.

The second illustration shows the commonly used yellow, red and black label and is a DJ cut called Froggie by U Roy Junior, a Lloyd Campbell production from 1973 and one of the last issues on the label.

Smash

Established in 1970, Smash managed around forty issues before it was wound up in 1973. Initially concentrating mainly on Bunny Lee productions it was later used for issues by Keith Hudson, Clancy Collins, Joe Gibbs and Gussie Clarke.

The illustrated side is The Wizzard by the Aggrovators, an instrumental with strings. The flip side is Sweet Like Candy credited to The Aggro Band, a DJ cut to Pat Kelly's How Long Will It Take by Winston Williams.

Summit

Another label that ran from 1970 to 1973, Summit concentrated exclusively on Leslie Kong productions until the end of it's run (Kong had died in 1971). Rivers Of Babylon by the Melodians was a huge seller on the label.

Everything Is Beautiful by the Rockstones (BB Seaton)/Give Up by Beverlys All Stars, the first issue on the label.

Monkey Girl/Version by The Maytals. Undoubtedly hoping to repeat the success of Monkey Man this was issued in 1971.

Thanks to Mark Atkinson for the Rockstones illustration.
