    A Trojan Island

Trojan have been quietly releasing a whole series of CD’s over the last year or so. Some are compilations and some are original LP’s released on CD in a no frills style with minimal notes and no extra tracks. The latest two of these come out on 30th January and are two classic LP’s from ten years apart that taken together illustrate just how much the music changed in the 70’s.

The Story Of Trojan Records – again?

When Trojan announced they were producing a “The Story Of Trojan Records” box set I’d have to say I was just a little underwhelmed, after all Trojan have been producing Trojan Story compilations since 1971, what would be different this time?

First things first. This set totals 123 tracks over five CD’s. It’s packaged in a smart box and comes complete with a 50 page book, four reproduction print/cards and a window sticker. Now the … continue reading…

    A Small Axe

If Bob Marley And The Wailers had produced no more music following their sojourn with Lee Perry circa 1970-72 then Bob might not have been a global superstar but the group would have certainly have been legends within reggae. Many say the music they made in this period is their best and with tunes like Small Axe, Duppy Conqueror and Soul Rebel it’s hard to disagree.

    In the Gleaner

There are a couple of intersting pieces in the Gleaner today:

First off Mel Cooke talks to U Roy about his early recordings for Duke Reid, how they came about and his dealings with the producer. Check it.

Next the Gleaner reports on a court case between Clement Dodd Jnr on one side and his stepmother, Norma, sister Carol, on the other. The case related to his removal from Dodds 1987 will, Clement Jnr claimed … continue reading…

    Creation Rebel 2010

More on a modern tip, UK based producer Frenchie of Maximum Sounds has just released a series of 7″s based on the Bunny Lee lick of the Studio One rhythm Creation Rebel – first cut by Burning Spear and done over for Bunny by Johnny Clarke. This release takes the original 70’s rhythm and updates it, there may be a loop in there somewhere but this is essentially the same rhythm as used by Bunny … continue reading…

    Dub Echoes DVD & CD/LP

I mentioned the impending release of the Dub Echoes film on DVD by Soul Jazz last November. Well it’s been a bit delayed but it finally gets released on the 11 May.

Alongside the DVD there will be a double CD/triple vinyl release of accompanying tunes. I know little of the new fangled styles like Dub Step that are featured but there are enough old school tunes for it to deserve a mention anyway. Hopefully … continue reading…

    Micron On Pressure Sounds

Another new release that sounds like it could be a winner is Every Mouth Must Be Fed a various producers set of singles originally released on the Micron label in the early to mid 70’s. Due out on Pressure Sounds on 16 June this set should be well worth checking.

Track Listing: 1. Conference At Waterhouse – Jah Stitch 2. Conference Version 3. Lorna Banana – Junior Byles 4. Revolution Is For The Chinaman – … continue reading…
