Four from the Trojan

The Trojan brand/catalogue has moved around a fair bit over the years and each time it moves it takes some time before it becomes clear what direction the new owners will be going with the music. The latest overseers are BMG and it looks like they will be going for artist anthologies and classic LP’s with bonus tracks. Nothing particularly surprising or groundbreaking about this strategy but the low prices and the fact that even … continue reading…

Caltone Pressure

Few would argue that there are many better re-issue companies than Pressure Sounds these days. For vinyl only you can talk about Deeper Knowledge/Digikiller and Dubstore, for CD and vinyl Universal/Trojan maybe run them close but Pressure Sounds continue to lead the way with quality CD’s/LP’s alongside vinyl singles all put together with a style and attention to detail that makes them hard to resist.

The latest addition to their catalogue is a collection of … continue reading…

Pressed on a replica JJ label and backed with No False Witness by the same group. Expect to pay around £4.00 for a … continue reading…

Studio First On Ebay

An almost regular look at the last seven days of reggae vinyl sales on ebay returns after a couple of weeks off.

Studio One has always been a difficult one. Though rightly popular it’s a mine field for people chasing down original tunes due to the myriad of different Jamaican labels and the very variable sound quality. 60’s UK issues on Coxsone/Studio One are always in demand as are early 70’s Bamboo and Banana issues, … continue reading…

Something called Loving Reggae

Another old podcast is dusted off and given a new lease of life. This one is strictly 68-71 reggae styles. Once all the old podcasts have been removed from podomatic and put up here I may even try and get it together to do some new ones…

Pity it’s in French!

Natty Dread #49

The latest (June/July) issue of French language reggae magazine Natty Dread is out now. The Slickers are on the front cover and they feature extensively in the magazine alongside Prestige, Queen Ifrika, Reggae Regulars, Burro Banton and quite a bit more. As always the layout and illustrations etc are top quality – I just wish it was written in English!
