From it’s very first issue Black Music Magazine published a Reggae chart. At first only UK released singles and albums were featured. Later, in January 1976, a pre-release singles chart was issued as well – the definition of a pre-release on this occasion being (for the most part) Jamaican issued singles as opposed to those released on UK labels. This was further supplemented in December 1977 with a 12″ chart.
Though not necessarily a completely accurate reflection of which records sold best (Black Music only come out once a month and sometimes only one shop was used for returns) these charts give a great insight into what was being issued and what was popular.
