      A rhythm called Politics

This is new and I like it, a decent hard hitting Reggae rhythm that doesn’t pull any punches. The artists are saying stuff too, no gangsta posturing but tunes with a message.

This is Busy Signal with the rhythms title track, you should also look out for the Konshens and the Chuck Fenda.

      Black Cinderella

Freddie McGregor’s son Stephen has made a real name for himself as a producer in recent years. He’s best known for hardcore Dancehall rhythms so this production, featuring Gyptian with a tune called On And On over a remake of the Black Cinderella rhythm, is something a little different…it’s pretty damn good too, with a much harder and more energetic feel than alot of modern “one drop” tunes.

      Listening to…

I’ve been checking KHSU Reggae Jamdown out of Arcatia (pronounced Arcadia?) Humboldt County, California alot lately. You can check the show at the website

This show has great music but is unintentionally quite funny to UK ears as well. DJ Dub Cowboy shouts out “Massive Respect” quite alot and then starts going on about the shows sponsors which are probably the kind of things you’d expect for a Reggae show on Californian college radio…it’s … continue reading…

      Studio One rhythm mix

Spotted on the Blood And Fire message board. Reality Shock Records have a mix online featuring UK artists voiced over original Studio One rhythms…and very good it is too. It doesn’t look like this will be around for long so grab it while you can. Download.

      Grand Theft Auto 4

I don’t play games much but was interested to find out what was played on the two Reggae radio channels on Grand Theft Auto 4. Incase anyone cares they go something like this:

      Tuff Gong Station

Stephen Marley – Chase Dem Bob Marley and the Wailers – Concrete Jungle (The Unreleased Original Jamaican Version) Bob Marley and the Wailers – Pimper’s Paradise Bob Marley and the Wailers – Rat Race Bob Marley and the Wailers … continue reading…

      Downloads gone legal

While there has never been a justification for people giving away tunes that you can readily go out and buy, the situation with brand new rhythms has been a difficult one. Many of these don’t see release on 7″ anymore and it was extremely difficult to get hold of legitimate copies as a result.

It’s been something of an open secret that the web was crying out for a reasonable download service dedicated to … continue reading…

      Is Mavado a video game?

The truth is finally out Dancehall’s latest talent Mavado is actually a cynical marketing ploy by the manufacturers of the game Grand Theft Auto. OK well maybe not but his over the top Gangsta style fits well with the game.

It’s a shame really as Mavado is a huge talent. If he would drop the skull bore, marrow fly lyrics we could appreciate him a whole lot more. Check this post on the heatwave … continue reading…

It’s hard to keep up with the amount of Mashups and remixes that are coming out these days and when you hear the quality of some of them you wouldn’t want to bother anyway. Still once in a while something comes along that is just a little bit special and worth checking out. One that definitely falls into this catagory is a melodica version of Albaroise’s classic Kingston Town that was featured on the Blood … continue reading…

      More Louder Than Words

Earlier this month we featured a trailer for a film about Dancehall by Norman Stolzhoff called Louder Than Words. As work progresses we’re looking forward to hearing more about this project, here is what the Jamaican Gleaner has to say.

      UK MC's

The Heatwave Crew have just released a compilation tracing 25 years of UK MC’s called An England Story. The double CD on Soul Jazz Records features a wide range of artists from Saxon’s hitmakers Tippa Irie and Papa Levi, groundbreaking UK Hip Hop from the London Posse and modern Dancehall crossover sounds.

Whilst more of the old school would have been welcome, Papa Levi’s Mi God Mi King is easily one of the strongest of … continue reading…
