West Country Reggae

With a significant 50’s Windrush era West Indian community, the St Paul’s riot in 1980 and it’s earlier history as a port central to the 18th Century transatlantic slave trade, Bristol has been something of a microcosm of the trials and tribulations of the black community in the UK. As such it’s hardly surprising that in the 70’s and beyond the city should have had a thriving reggae scene.

Alton And Hortense vinyl on Rock-A-Shacka

Following the release of the Soul Train Is Coming CD featuring Alton Ellis productions Rock-A-Shacka have released a 7″ and 12″ of Alton Ellis material.

12″ (DB004) Alton Ellis – Love To Share/Let Him Try, a lovers tune and a soulful ballad do-over of his Studio One classic respectively. 7″ (DB003) Alton Ellis – Again/Hortense Ellis – Love Is The Key. Two early 70’s reggae tunes.

Greensleeves for Lovers

Coming later this month on Greensleeves Records is a compilation of Lovers Rock tunes imaginatively titled This Is Lovers Rock. This goes beyond the recent Greensleeves reissue programme as it includes tunes released on other labels such as Ariwa and Fashion.

There are plenty of great tunes on this and it would be an ideal introduction to the genre for those who don’t usually check for Lovers. It’s got a great cover too!
