For a short period in the late 60's and
early 70's Blues and Soul magazine ran a Reggae chart and the odd feature/review.
This particular chart dates from February 1970. It shows the major domination
of Trojan records in the UK during this period with only the Pama group
offering any kind of challenge. By the time this chart was published
Blues and Soul were writing in their editorial that they were considering
dropping the reggae content as "...Reggae is dying the slow death as
a mass media music..." and "...the few record companied involved don't
seem very interested in promoting their music.." (i.e. they wouldn't
take out adverts in B&S!). Shortly after this the Reggae section was
dropped, only to be resurected a couple of years later with the writings
of Chris Lane. |
