Django rides again

Out now on limited 7″ vinyl from Trojan records, two cuts of the Return Of Django rhythm that Lee Perry returned to in the 1970’s. Sick And Tired by Neville Grant and Big May by Bunny Rugs. Both tunes are versions of the Fats Domino R&B classic Sick And Tired.

Sick And Tired

The Neville Grant cut was recorded circa 1973 and originally issued on Justice League in Jamaica and on Downtown in the UK. When this first came out it was in a time when Perry was utilising a number of older rhythms with new versions including Tighten Up (Dillinger – Tighten Up Skank) Place In The Sun (Dillinger – John Devour) etc.

Big May

Big May was first released on the 1975 Klik (UK) album To Love Somebody. There was no original 7″ release but it was issued on an Upsetter label 7″ by Patate records out of France around 2000. Bunny Rugs AKA Bunny Scott went on to head up the Third World band.

This new release on a reproduction Black Swan label is limited to 500 numbered copies and like other Trojan issues comes on heavyweight vinyl and in a die cut Trojan sleeve.

Given that both outings are reasonably similar a back to back release is a little surprising but as originals of the Neville Grant 7″ go for £100 or more a re-issue is welcome all the same.
