Maytals – before there was Reggay…

MaytalsYesterday was Record Store Day and as part of the day Trojan released another of their limited edition 7″ singles, this was to be sold only in records shops participating in Record Store Day but it sounds like copies may be more widely available so wait a while to see if you can pick this up for retail price before looking at the prices it’s already fetching on ebay.

Straight from the mastertapes this release has two previously unissued versions of well know Maytals songs recorded for Lesley Kong in 1968. First up is Do The Boogaloo, this is apparently an earlier cut of Do The Reggay, apparently the first ever song to namecheck reggae in it’s title.

The Trojan website says that this first version, recorded on 12 June 1968 was held back in favour of a second cut celebrating ae new dance craze, the Reggay… and the rest is history.

Do The Boogaloo is fascinating but is musically very similar to the previously released version. It’s certainly the same backing track with only minor changes and as such it’s a nice novelty release perhaps more for completists than your normal punter.

Taken from the same tape is Bim Today, Bam Tomorrow. Again a pretty well know Maytals track from the era.

The change here is more striking as this has a nice funky soul backing instead of the the slow reggae rhythm on the original. Now if the soul people pick up on this, and whilst it’s still a slow tune there is no reason they shouldn’t, then this release may become all the harder to track down and more pricey too.
